Collected from the only active natrocarbonatite volcano in the world. Natrocarbonatite is made up largely of two minerals, nyerereite (named after Julius Nyerere, the first president of independent Tanzania) and gregoryite (named after J.W. Gregory, one of the first geologists to study the East African Rift Valley. The Minerals are both carbonates in which sodium and potassium are present in significant quantities. Both of these minerals are anhydrous (i.e they contain no water) and when they come into contact with the moisture of the atmosphere, they begin to react extremely quickly. The specimens were collected in molten state and sealed in glass vials under argon atmosphere

Incomplete educational collection of Dutch Soil samples (Grondsoorten aan Nederlands Oppervlakte), including e.g. sandstone, Tegelen Clay and peat. The collection is by the Dutch Firm W.J. Thieme & Cie, in Zutphen and probably dates from the first part of the 20th century. Thieme & Cie is well known for publishing books, maps etc. for schools. I never new that the actually made these educational collections. The collection contains 11 glas numbered jars out of a possible 26.
