Gold was discovered in Papua New Guinea in 1887 in the Lakoli River and in the years thereafter on many other locations. The discovered gold is always alluvial, only on the islands of Misima and Murua, east of Papua New Guinea gold was discovered in vein in bedrock. The Upper Watut River area is located near the Gulf of Huon. Gold was discovered in the Upper Watut by a German Expedition in 1913. A very large discovery leading to a oldfasioned Gold Rush took place in the Edie River parallel to the Watut River in 1926. In 1934 more than 27 Gold Mining companies were  active in the region. The upper Watut Gold Alluvial joined these in 1935.
